Who we are

Guess That Sample is a music trivia party game. This policy describes how we handle information when you play, host a party, join as a guest, or use our website.

What we collect

Account and profile. If you create an account we store an identifier and the display name and avatar you choose. Guests who join a party in a browser can play without an account.

Gameplay. We store the rooms you play in, the answers you submit, and your scores, so a match can run and results can be shown to the room.

Technical. Standard server logs, which may include IP address and device or browser information, for security and reliability.

Music previews

Song previews and artwork are provided by third-party music services. Playing a round requests a preview from that service at play time. We do not store audio.

Crash reports

When the website or the app runs into an error, a report is sent to Sentry, the service we use to find and fix crashes. Nothing is sent unless an error happens.

A report contains the error, where in our code it happened, and technical details such as the device model, operating system or browser. Before a report leaves your device or our servers we remove email addresses, account and room identifiers (including party join codes) and the query part of web addresses. Reports do not include your display name, screenshots or what was on screen, and Sentry is set not to store IP addresses; it does estimate an approximate, city-level location from where a report came from.

Reports from the app also include a random identifier for that installation of the app, so we can tell how many installations an error affects. It is not linked to your name or account.

Analytics

To understand how the game is used, we send a small set of usage events to PostHog, an analytics service: which pages or screens are viewed, whether an early-access sign-up went through, store-button clicks, and how solo games go (which question, whether the answer was right, and the score).

On the website we do not use cookies for this or store anything in your browser to recognise you, so we cannot tell a later visit is yours.

In the appwe keep a random identifier for that installation of the app, so we can see how many people come back to play. It is not linked to your name or account. The app also reports when it is opened or closed, along with the app version and your device's operating system and version (not the device model).

Events do not include your email address, display name, what you type, or recordings of the screen. Before an event is sent we remove the query part of web addresses and party join codes. PostHog is set not to store IP addresses; it does estimate an approximate location from where an event came from, such as the city and postal area. Answers in party games are not sent to PostHog.

Advertising in the app. After your first few times playing, the app may show an ad between matches, never during one. Ads are provided by Google AdMob. They are not personalised: we do not ask to track you across other apps and websites, and we do not use your device's advertising identifier. To deliver and measure ads and to prevent fraud, Google's software receives information from your device, such as your IP address and the type of device and operating system. The app counts how many times you have played on your device to decide when an ad may appear; that count stays on your device. There are no ads on the website or on the TV display.

Your ad choices.Where the law requires it (for example in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland), the app asks for your choice before it shows any ads, using a form provided by Google. If you do not consent, you may still see ads, but they are not chosen using your personal data. You can change your choice at any time from “Privacy choices” on the app's home screen.

How we use it

To run matches, keep scores, operate and secure the service, and improve the game.

Whether and how information is shared for advertising is pending legal review.

Sharing

Your display name, avatar and score are visible to other players in your party and on any TV display that party has open. We share data with service providers who host and operate the game on our behalf.

Retention

A room becomes inactive after a period without players and can no longer be joined or played. Room and match records are currently retained after that unless the player deletes them (see “Your choices and rights”).

If someone reports a player, we keep the report and the reported display name so we can review abuse.

If you report an ad, we keep the report — the reason, your note and when the ad was shown — so we can block bad ads. It isn't linked to you.

Retention periods are pending legal review.

Children

The game is intended for players aged 13 and over.

Before you play for the first time we ask for your birth month and year. We only use it to check that you are old enough, on your device: the date itself is not stored or sent to us. Your device remembers only whether you passed, so you are not asked again. If you are under 13 you will not be able to play.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, export or delete your information.

You can delete your data in the app: on the home screen tap Delete my data. This removes your player name, scores and answers from every game, and your guest account. Reports made by or about a player and moderation records are kept so we can review abuse. If you played in a web browser, email us at admin@guessthatsample.com to delete your data.
